Posture is very important when it comes to bone and muscle health. As we are often told, it is a good idea to always sit up with our spine as straight as possible. When walking, we should always aim to keep our spine at a straight angle and without slouching. Unfortunately, we often forget these important tips as the years advance and we then run the risk of developing a bad posture. In this article, we explore some posture exercises for loved ones to remedy this condition.
Shoulder Squeezes
The best way to do this posture workout is to imagine that there is a small object (such as a coin) that is magically stuck between your shoulder blades. The idea then is to squeeze your shoulder blades in such a way as to squeeze the coin. To make this workout even more effective, you should tilt your shoulders downwards in order to avoid creating a stress point on your neck. Repeat this workout several times.
Chin Tuck
This is a posture workout that involves tucking the chin towards the chest. To do this, lie on your back and then place a pillow or rolled-up towel at the base of your head. Slowly move your chin towards the chest and ensure that the back of your head stays on the pillow. Repeat several times and when it gets easier, you can vary this workout by standing up although the effects are pretty much the same.
Chest Stretches
To do this, stand by a doorway with the arms touching both sides of the doorway. You should then gently lunge forwards while keeping the hands in position. Stretch as far as you can without causing pain or discomfort to your muscles.
Core Workout
This particular workout is meant to stretch your abdominal muscles. These play an important role when it comes to posture. To perform this workout, lie down with your knees bent. You should then lift your abdomen while keeping your shoulders and feet firmly on the ground. Do this several times and while your abdomen is raised, try to hold that position for a few seconds. You should also raise and lower your torso gently so as to give your abdominal muscles a good workout.
Listen to Your Body
As with all physical activities, it is important to ensure that you are listening to your body. If in the middle of these workouts you sense any pain or discomfort, you should stop immediately. It is also a great idea to start slow and gradually increase the intensity of the workout over time.
