As we grow older, the likelihood of contracting certain illnesses becomes higher. According to statistics in the United States, some of the most common diseases include cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, obesity, and diabetes. To ensure that your loved one is safe and healthy, it is important to visit your healthcare provider to do an annual routine check-up. Today, we share with you some essential medical tests to ensure that you get ahead of any upcoming ailments and take the necessary precautions to protect your loved one from developing that condition.
ECG And X-Ray
At the top of our list, we have the X-Ray and ECG tests. Cardiovascular diseases cause heart attacks and strokes and are the top leading cause of death in the United States every year. Now, with the COVID-19 virus disproportionately affecting older adults, an X-ray and ECG (electrocardiogram) are two of the most important tests your loved one should take.
Using electromagnetic radiation, the X-ray captures a photographic image of the chest and internal organs such as the heart, lungs, and surrounding bones like the ribcage. This test would be key for detecting abnormalities that could signify bronchitis, cancer, pneumonia, fractures, cysts, and many more. On the other hand, an ECG will record and measure the heart’s electrical activity and help detect any cardiac abnormalities. This will be helpful for those who live with hypertension, those with a family history of cardiac-related illnesses, and patients who experience chest pains and breathlessness.
Blood Tests
A blood test is one of the most important tests you should get to ensure that your loved one has the appropriate count of platelets, red and white blood cells. This would be critical, especially if they are a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy, to check the effect of the medication on them. In addition, as there are many types of blood tests available, each can be used to tell the presence or absence of certain hormones, substances, nutrients, and compounds in the bloodstream. Common blood tests include a lipid panel, basic metabolic panel, thyroid panel, or coagulation panel.
Prostate Cancer Screening
According to research, about one in eight men will experience prostate cancer in their lifetime. However, this number gets more worrisome in older men, as one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by age 85. A prostate cancer screening is conducted by measuring PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels in the blood or a digital rectal examination. If your loved one is over 65 or has a family history of this condition, they might be at a higher risk of developing this form of cancer. Consult with your healthcare provider regarding getting a prostate cancer screening.
Mammogram
Research by medical experts shows that 62 is the average age for most women to get diagnosed with breast cancer and that women 75 and above make up the majority of breast cancer patients. While there is a polarizing debate among medical professionals on how often they should have a mammogram, the American Cancer Society recommends that women over 55 get it at least once every two years and once a year for those with a family history of breast cancer.
